Councilmember DeMaio's Statement in Response to the Mayor's Proposal for the Miramar Landfill Function.
July 8th, 2010

Councilmember Carl DeMaio today released a statement in response to the Mayor’s announcement that he will invite private proposals for the Miramar Landfill function.

“I applaud the Mayor for pursuing the cost saving benefits of getting the city government out of the landfill business.  This idea will likely generate $15 million in savings for city taxpayers – funds that could be redirected to the core city services of public safety, street repairs, parks and libraries.  I urge the City Council to be open to this innovative idea.”

“I would not only vote against a tax increase, I will lead the fight against it.” --Councilman DeMaio on the trash tax
January 16th, 2009

A day after Mayor Jerry Sanders braced San Diego for fee increases and more service cuts, City Council members and union leaders went further, signaling that a charge for trash pickup could be next.

Council President Ben Hueso said other options should be exhausted, then voters should be asked whether the city should bill single-family homeowners for trash pickup.

“I think we should put it on the ballot and let the people decide, maybe in 2010 ... whether they want to pay for trash collection, or we're going to have to close down libraries,” Hueso said. “It's that simple.”
